Lt. Colonel Ron Mumm, when he was Commander of the Thunderbirds, asked Fisher to design a pen with a "gripping knob," to allow easy removal and replacement from the small, inside lower leg pocket of the pilots' flight suits. Approved in 1997, the Thunderbird Space Pen with its pilot-designed plunger is the writing instrument used by the pilots.

Other Astronaut Model Pens

The CH4 series of Space Pens is another model that, from a construction standpoint, can also be taken on all manned space flights. It's all brass and steel construction makes this space pen durable. The CH4 series are noticably slimmer than most space pens with a .320 diameter. They have a side button retract mechanism and a top plunger to extend the point. The CH4 series space pens come in chrome, black matte, gold or black grid. I've personally had my G4 for over 4 years and it looks almost as good as the day I bought it!
